On Addiction
It's hard to believe that I've become so addicted to a substance that I can feel the effects of being without it. Last week, I went one day without coffee, and I got a splitting headache. This isn't such a shock, I suppose, and hardly noteworthy, but I was just surprised that I had been drinking so much coffee, that it had gotten to the point where I physically could not function normally without it.
I don't think that's a good situation to be in with any substance.
Fortunately, in New York, coffee is readily available on almost every corner, in several forms. This may have helped put me into the position where I can't live without it. It certainly makes it easy to get a boost throughout the day, which is what coffee does to me. It clears my head, it makes me see things in a light that I didn't before, and it makes me come up with ideas with lightning speed.
There are a number of things a person could be addicted to that are far worse than coffee, so I'm glad it's the least of my worries. I'm glad, though, that I had that one day of detox though, to let me know where I stand on caffeine addiction. I'm sure that I'll be able to better control it now.
