Foreigner Van

In my consistent quest to find free rock music whenever I can, I found myself on Brooklyn's historic Fulton Landing today, in hot pursuit of a concert in which one of my favorite contemporary bands was playing.

Typically, when I'm walking alone around areas that could be considered dashingly romantic, I'm always thinking about how much more enjoyable it could be if somebody was walking around with me; attendant to my side, conversant with me and my thoughts. It'd be nice. There are times, however, when having a companion, as precious as it would be, would distract me from things that are going on around me, which I casually observe and take mental notes on when by myself.

Today's special feature, which was quite noticeable and thought-provoking was a seemingly normal van that was driving around the same area as me. While on my way to the concert grounds, the van passed by me in the street, blasting the song, "A Long, Long Way From Home" by late 70s rock group Foreigner. I was walking and I started to rock out a little bit (nobody was looking), but I kept on my way, and I didn't really think anything of it. Not until later, when I saw the van again, only a few blocks down, as I was getting closer to the gates of the park. Walking into the park, and there was the same van, still blasting the same song out the window. Evidently this driver was lost and could not find where he had to go, so he happened to be driving around this neighborhood the same time I was walking around it.

Well, I got to the concert a little early and after standing around for about ten minutes, I decided I'd sneak out and try to find a quick bite to eat before the concert started. I found a little grocery store not far from the park and searched around inside for a while until I got something satisfactory to munch on.

When I exited the store, though, and began walking to the park again, back to the concert, I saw the same van yet again, blasting the same song. The van was parked, unloading something, and "Long, Long Way From Home", evidently on repeat, was blasting out of the windows.

I saw this van playing the same song not once, not twice, but thrice, in the span of 40 minutes or so. The song in question is only 2:51 long, so this guy driving the van must have really liked it, and he obviously wasn't considering whether or not anybody outside the van liked the song, because he clearly didn't care.

Anyway, I went to the show and saw the band play their set, much to my delight, much as I expected. But my day was made far more memorable and interesting by what was unexpected.
